The year is starting out smoothly!

Section 1
I have entered a few grades on HAC. More important grades will be coming this week.

Today I handed out vocabulary books.  Tonight they should make pictionaries and do the Choosing the Right Word.  I check the homework using the responders, so they need to have the correct answers.  The quiz on Unit 1 will be Friday, September 25.

We have also started My Favorite Chaperone. The students should be reading their books at home and answering the questions on a separate sheet of paper.  Students will be graded on completion of the questions (spot checked for accuracy), a literary terms quiz (see below), and a summary activity at the end of the story submitted via Google Docs.

Sections 2 and 3
We have entered a few grades on HAC. More important grades will be coming this week.

Mrs. Jamison and I have been spending out time getting the students organized and prepared for the first piece of literature, My Favorite Chaperone.  Today we organized their binders.  We have also been teaching strategies for evaluating a text.  Tomorrow we will review reading a text with a purpose.  We will start our story on Thursday.

Students will be reading the story with three goals in mind.  First, they will be collecting supports for the performance task: At the end of this collection, students will write an expository essay focusing on the challenges immigrants face and the adjustments immigrants make. Second, they will be learning literary terms, which they will be quizzed on.  See the links above.  Finally, students will summarize the story in 100 words.  All the while, we will be teaching them close reading skills.
