Analyzing Poetry Unit 2014

Here is the Appreciating Poetry section from our book.

Poetry Unit from Holt
(Possibly 2 weeks.  This is pretty much what I will be doing.)

This is the question they must be able to answer at the end of the unit:

In “Poem Title,” ( the poet) uses many different poetic elements to ______
___________________________________________.  Using what you’ve learned in this workshop, analyze the form, sound devices, and language in this poem. Notice how all these elements work together to communicate a powerful message.

Warm-ups (include in their notebook)
Each day, students will be given one of the following poems to work on to discuss.  They will struggle, and then we will discuss.
·      “Willow and Ginko”
·      “Mother to Son”
·      “Speech to the Young”
·      “On the Grasshopper and Cricket”
·      “Ode on Solitude”
·      Others as needed

Notebook (Formative grade for completion for 2nd MP)
Students will respond to a question about the daily poem.
Students will copy key terms from the Appreciating Poetry from the New Holt.
Students will work through the close read questions in the Appreciating Poetry.
Part 3: Analyzing Text will be used as a practice draft for analyzing a poem.

Class Studies
(probably done concurrently with the Appreciating Poetry or not)
“Charge of the Light Brigade”
“Boots of Spanish Leather”

Writing (Summative grade for 3rd MP)
·      Students can choose from one of the following options.
·      They will answer the focus question in a three-paragraph essay which will include a hook, thesis, (1,2,3), a summary for context, and a thorough analysis grouped by topic.

1. “O Captain! My Captain!” by Walt Whitman
2. “There But for the Grace” by Wislawa Szymborska
3. “Hanging Fire” by Audre Lorde & “Teenagers” by Pat Mora

Writing Focus
The writing can be done in groups so that students can work on the brainstorming together.
The goal of the written piece is to see that students can analyze a piece of poetry thoroughly by answering the focus question.
Another goal is teach students how to group their analysis logically into paragraphs for discussion.

Write a Poem (Summative grade for 2nd MP? depends on pacing)
·      Write a poem in the form of their choice.
·      Type and illustrate
·      Read to the class
Must have a brief explanation which explains how their poem uses  "... form, sound devices, and language ... to communicate a powerful message."
I will create a checklist so students will know exactly what to include for a 100%.
