January Achieve contest results so far

I have set up a little contest in the class to see who can earn the most Achieve points for January.  I am also posting who has earned the most points for the year.  In the room, students can only see the top students in each section.  I thought I would post the top ten for each class so they can see if they are close.  Students can also ask to see the whole list in class.

The goal is for students to have completed 40 articles before the last DCAS test because the Achieve company says 40 is the magic number.

The sections are in order: Section 1, 2, 3.

Poetry Unit Requirements: Important dates

I had planned on the students having a written poem on Tuesday the 21st.  That will not happen.  The personal poem will be due January 23. (see requirements below)

The poetry analysis paper will be due January 27... for now.  I want to make sure students have enough instruction and work time.

This type of Common Core analysis/writing is different from poetry study done at this level in the past.  The level of analysis is more complex and comprehensive.  Students are not simply asked to identify poetic elements. They must examine how those devices contribute to the message.  Likewise, the response to a poem is not personal.  It is skills based. Students must demonstrate their ability interpret the message based on the writer's choices.

Here is everything the students need to do for the poetry analysis unit:

Writing about a Poem

Analyzing a poem
1. What is the writer doing in the poem?
It is a verb: describing, comparing, observing, questioning, listing, painting, etc.

2. Discuss which poetic devices are present in the poem.

2b & 3. Describe and support your interpretation of the message of the poem WHILE explaining that the poet devices help convey this message.

Important!
While it would be great to include how this poem affects you and describe what it makes you think about, in this formal writing you must stick to the details that are in the poem. Do not include personal anecdotes.  For example, when I was discussing “Stopping by Woods…,” I was saying how I feel like I am the man and most people around me are the horse wondering why I am watching the snow.  This personal observation should not be in your writing.

Examples:
In the spoken word poem “Daddy are you Proud of Me?” Nego True (1) leads the listener through five types of fathers.  (2) Form, sound devices, and language in this poem work together to communicate the (3) powerful message that although we may have had different experiences with our fathers, we all have something in common: We want to know that our fathers are proud of us.

In the poem “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening,” Robert Frost (1) uses a narrative speaker who describes his time observing snow falling in a woods.  Robert Frost uses (2) Form, sound devices, and language to (3) communicate the message that, although we should stop to observe the beauty around us, we cannot, unfortunately, stay in the moment very long.

Poetic Devices
Form
    ___ Lines (length, number)
    ___ Stanzas (how many, patterns)
    ___ Traditional or unconventional
___ Speaker (Distinct? What is he doing?)

Sound devices
See packet: “Like different colors of paint…” Very important
Poets choose words not only for their meaning, but also for their sounds.

___ Rhythm (meter and why yes or no)
___ Rhyme (patterns, effect of rhyme, no rhyme)
    ___ Repetition (patterns, effect)
___ Alliteration (would it sound better without?)
    ___ Assonance

Imagery (not all are needed)
___ See, Hear, Feel, Smell, Taste (what effect?)

Figurative Language
___ Simile (why these specific comparisons?)
___ Metaphor (Extended metaphor? Why these comparisons?)
___ Personification (Why give human qualities to inanimate object/non-human?)

Things to keep in mind from the notes:
Like different colors of paint or the notes on a musical scale, language can
be arranged to create a desired effect. For example, short, choppy lines can produce a fast-paced pounding beat, while long, rhythmic lines can create a soothing melody. Poets manipulate the words and lines in their writing, fully conscious of how their work will sound when read aloud and how it will make readers feel.
Poets choose words not only for their meaning, but also for their sounds. The sound of a word or line can help emphasize meaning or create a musical quality.
One way poets create imagery is by using figurative language, or imaginative descriptions that are not literally true.
Notice how these examples of figurative language help you picture ordinary things in new ways.

How can I earn an A on this piece?

The B paper will...
Discuss the three aspects of the poetry analysis
___ what the poet does in the poem
___ which devices are present
___ how those devices help communicate
___ explain the message of the poem
___ no personal anecdotes used to explain message
___ No grammar errors

The A paper will do it with more complete explanations and will stay focused.

The C paper will include the requirements, but will show me that the student has only a basic understanding of the process of analyzing a poem.

If the paper is handed in on-time and uses proper grammar, no student should get below a 70%.

Because students have never done something like this before, this written grade will be a 200-point summative grade, which means it will count the same as a literature test.

Write your own poem (100 points summative)
____ Must be long enough to meet reading time requirement (at least 30 seconds, but I would like over 1 minute.)
____ Typed or written on paper
____ Illustrated nicely
____ Poem will be read and recorded in front of the class

Poetic devices checklist on your poem (50 points summative)
Use the checklist on the other side.
Go through each one examining your own poem.
Explain briefly whether you included the device and why you did or did not use it.
(Seriously, I just want to see your reasons for your choices.  Don’t go crazy on this!)

Grades update on HAC.

Students too the unit 7 quiz and the 1-6 quiz today.  No more grades will be added for the second marking period.  However, there are students that need to make up work for various reasons.  Please check HAC to see if there are any missing assignments (blanks or MIS).  The grades on HAC, for many students, are the 2nd MP grade... but not all.

We are not doing vocab next week.

The weights of the vocab quizzes have been adjusted to reflect the importance of vocabulary (in sections 2 and 3 so far).  Vocabulary is part of the class, not the focus of the class.  When I put all the assignments in a spreadsheet and looked at how much each counted, I saw that the vocab quizzes counted more than they should.  So I made those quizzes count for .5 weight instead of 1.

What was the outcome of the change?  Surprisingly, not much at all- .5% or less.  There are few students for whom the change dropped them to a B, but they were on the edge anyway.  However, I will talk to those students to see if there is a missing assignment they need to make up.

I hope you appreciate the honesty of this blog post.  I wanted to make you aware of the changes I needed to make.  This is the first year I have not been able to simply make vocabulary worth 15% or classwork worth 50%.  A vocab quiz should not count anywhere near what an essay counts.  I want my summative grades to truly be a measure of a student's mastery of the skills taught.

If you have any concerns, let me know.

Are you studying for Friday's quizzes?

Yes, I said quizzes.

There will be the usual quiz on unit 7.
There will also be a review quiz on units 1-6.
If you can do well on this Quizlet practice of 120 words, you should do fine on the 50 questions that look just like it.

Writing a poetry analysis: WIllow and Ginkgo

In section 3, we spent 30 minutes discussing the following poem.  We will discuss this further tomorrow.  The other two classes will get to this depth tomorrow.  Students are being taught how to analyze a poem.  We will use the same prompt as we discuss poem after poem.  Here is how students could start a piece about the poem "Willow and Ginkgo."

In “Willow and Ginkgo,” Eve Merriam uses many different poetic elements to show us her observations about two trees.  She uses form, sound devices, and language in this poem to communicate the message that she is affected more by the strength of the ginkgo than she is by the beauty of the willow.

Willow and Ginkgo
by Eve Merriam

The willow is like an etching,
Fine-lined against the sky.
The ginkgo is like a crude sketch,
Hardly worthy to be signed.

The willow’s music is like a soprano,
Delicate and thin.
The ginkgo’s tune is like a chorus
With everyone joining in.

The willow is sleek as a velvet-nosed calf;
The ginkgo is leathery as an old bull.
The willow’s branches are like silken thread;
The ginkgo’s like stubby rough wool.

The willow is like a nymph with streaming hair;
Wherever it grows, there is green and gold and fair.
The willow dips to the water,
Protected and precious, like the king’s favorite daughter.

The ginkgo forces its way through gray concrete;
Like a city child, it grows up in the street.
Thrust against the metal sky,
Somehow it survives and even thrives.

My eyes feast upon the willow,
But my heart goes to the ginkgo.

Form: traditional, stanzas, rhyme scheme
Sound: rhyme, rhythm
Language: similes, word choice

Analyzing Poetry Unit 2014

Here is the Appreciating Poetry section from our book.

Poetry Unit from Holt
(Possibly 2 weeks.  This is pretty much what I will be doing.)

This is the question they must be able to answer at the end of the unit:

In “Poem Title,” ( the poet) uses many different poetic elements to ______
___________________________________________.  Using what you’ve learned in this workshop, analyze the form, sound devices, and language in this poem. Notice how all these elements work together to communicate a powerful message.

Warm-ups (include in their notebook)
Each day, students will be given one of the following poems to work on to discuss.  They will struggle, and then we will discuss.
·      “Willow and Ginko”
·      “Mother to Son”
·      “Speech to the Young”
·      “On the Grasshopper and Cricket”
·      “Ode on Solitude”
·      Others as needed

Notebook (Formative grade for completion for 2nd MP)
Students will respond to a question about the daily poem.
Students will copy key terms from the Appreciating Poetry from the New Holt.
Students will work through the close read questions in the Appreciating Poetry.
Part 3: Analyzing Text will be used as a practice draft for analyzing a poem.

Class Studies
(probably done concurrently with the Appreciating Poetry or not)
“Charge of the Light Brigade”
“Boots of Spanish Leather”

Writing (Summative grade for 3rd MP)
·      Students can choose from one of the following options.
·      They will answer the focus question in a three-paragraph essay which will include a hook, thesis, (1,2,3), a summary for context, and a thorough analysis grouped by topic.

1. “O Captain! My Captain!” by Walt Whitman
2. “There But for the Grace” by Wislawa Szymborska
3. “Hanging Fire” by Audre Lorde & “Teenagers” by Pat Mora

Writing Focus
The writing can be done in groups so that students can work on the brainstorming together.
The goal of the written piece is to see that students can analyze a piece of poetry thoroughly by answering the focus question.
Another goal is teach students how to group their analysis logically into paragraphs for discussion.

Write a Poem (Summative grade for 2nd MP? depends on pacing)
·      Write a poem in the form of their choice.
·      Type and illustrate
·      Read to the class
Must have a brief explanation which explains how their poem uses  "... form, sound devices, and language ... to communicate a powerful message."
I will create a checklist so students will know exactly what to include for a 100%.

Section 3 Algernon essays are scored.

My New Year's resolution!
Now that I have graded sections 2 and 3, I have an over-all observation about the pieces.  The lengths of the pieces were good; however, many of the pieces did not stick tightly to proving the thesis.  While they had the proper parts of the essay (most times), the essays seemed disjointed.  I made comments on the topic sentences that asked how the topic sentences tie into the thesis.  Where is the flow and focus?

Each paragraph had multiple supports, but did those supports expand upon the thesis of the paper and the topic sentence of the paragraph?

We are only halfway through the year.  I will continue to have students write about the literature to demonstrate their mastery of the Common Core Standards.

I scored it like the example below, which is straight from the outline and the discussions we had about organizing and supporting positions in essays.  If you would like me to e-mail your scores, I will.  When you return, I will print out your scores for you By the way, are you using any of your time to do Achieve?

Section 3, I will get to your essays soon.

Sections 2 & 3: I graded the Algernon packets

I looked at each page and gave a score. I averaged them on a spreadsheet.  If you want to know why you got what you got, let me know.

There are some students who did not turn in a packet.  Those are zeros.  Some students wrote down that they have the completed packet at home.  I gave them a temporary score of 75%.

The purpose of looking at each of the pages and giving them a score was to see if there is a corelation between the amount of brainstorming the students did and how well they supported their positions in their essays.  The packet is the formative for the summative essay.

I will get to the essays soon.  I will be giving them two scores:
  • I will grade the overall organization since we studied outlining.
  • Then I will give the essay a content score based on how well the position was supported.

Thursday, December 19, 2013

Final drafts of the Algernon essays are due tomorrow

In sections 2 and 3, we spent time proofreading each others' papers.  We spent the week discussing introductions, topic sentences, and the requirements needed for an A paper:

1. Mention inferrencing and point of view
2. Include some discussion about the format of the text.
3. You must have many supports for your position from the text.

(They do not have to be direct quotes, unless your inference comes from an understanding of a specific line.)

Today:
I thought I would provoke some discussion by putting the students into groups of three.  The group had to decide which paper was the best paper of the three.  These pictures below show the students who had the best essay in their group.

Note:
I have students who are very concerned that they do not know exactly what to write to get an A on the essay.  In my mind, students in the honors classes should get either an A or a B, both of which are good scores.  A good paper will have a paper introduction, well organized details with transitions, good sentence structure, and finally proper grammar.  Is the paper focused? Does the writer use enough supports for his position?

Again, my goal for this year is to keep teaching and assigning writing.  Every student's writing will improve by the end of the year, but not every student will write A papers every time. I will always make examples available when I have finished grading.  I would even regrade a paper if a student wants to sit down and figure out how to improve it.
