Homework

Section 1 should have read Raymond's Run using the packet I had given them.  They are to summarize every 30 lines.  They are also to answer the questions in the margins.

Sections 2 and 3 should read pages 148-151 in their online Holt book.  They should also have a rough draft of their narrative on Wednesday, or something close to a draft.  We are going to take two days to learn some ways to improve their pieces.  They could be using the online scoring tool to get an idea of how their narratives are progressing.


All classes are taking DCAS testing Monday and Tuesday of this week.  We also have an inservice on Friday.

Upcoming big assignments
Sections 2 and 3 have a narrative essay due by October 7.  The prompts are below. The essays will be scored using the Holt online scoring program and by me.  We will spend two days next week talking about how to write a good narrative.  When it is time to grade the essay, I will look at the computer scores and compare them to what I would expect. Students should be submitting the essays a few times to see how the improvements raise the score.  I demonstrated this today.

1.    Think of your best day in school. What happened that makes this day stand out in your memory? Write a story for a friend that tells about what happened on this day in school.

2.     You have made a very important discovery—one that will make you famous throughout the world. Write a story in which you tell about your discovery and how you made it. Be sure to include details about the setting and any characters in the story, and be sure that your story has a beginning, a middle, and an end.

3.    Think about a time when something unexpected happened. Write a narrative in which you tell about an unexpected event that happened to you or someone you know. Be sure to include specific details so that a reader can follow your story.

4.    Eleanor Roosevelt once said, “You must do the thing you think you cannot do.” Write a narrative about a time when you did something you thought you could not do. Be sure to include specific details so that a reader can follow your story.

Section 1 should have Raymond's Run read by next Wednesday.  They are to have summarized the story every 30 lines.  They are also supposed to answer the questions in the margins of the story.  Finally, they should be thinking about the following four questions.  They will be writing responses to at least two of them.

• I hope you will excuse me as I work my way through the new grading system implemented by the district. I am also trying to use 100% in every box so I can get averages easier.  I am using weights.  In other words, the smallest assignments are worth 1.  An assignment that has a weight of 2 is worth twice as much, meaning I value its worth more.  Likewise, something weighted at 3 is more important, and something with a weight of 4 is valued the most.
• I am still trying to use formative and summative correctly.  We are half way through the MP.  There are many more assignments to come.  I hope to become more predictable with my assignments as the year continues.

Sections 2 and 3 started their presentations.  I want students to be responsible for analyzing the literature.  I want to give them the tools and have them use them. 

In section 2, we learned about how the setting of Raymond's Run influences the conflict and the theme.  Those three presentations ROCKED!  I would score each a 110%.

Grades

•  Sections 2 and 3: I am updating grades on HAC.  I entered the homework grade and the quiz grade for vocab last week.  If you notice, all the grades say 100 points, but they are NOT.  I am trying something different for this MP.  I am using the weights in the background.  A test grade would have the weight of 1.  A quiz could be .5 or .25.  Homeworks could be .1.  I want to be able to look at the grade book and see the percentage in every column, not the points.  It's just another way of doing points. I hope it is not confusing for you when you look at it. :)
• Section 1: I will try to get the vocab grades up tonight and any make-up work I have in the basket.

Homework:

• Sections 2 and 3 have pictionaries, Choosing the Right Word, and Words in Context in the vocab book.  We are going to do another unit in one week.  I am seeing how the pace works.
