The most obvious thing I see is that I am a glutton for punishment: Students did a lot of writing! They wrote for a variety of purposes, including citing sources, which is very important for Smarter Balance.
I see a strong focus on vocabulary. Students in the honors class were exposed to over 350 regular words and plenty of literary vocabulary.
All students read three novels: two for KBAR and Night. They read a play and its adaptation into a movie: The Diary of Anne Frank. They also studied a movie as literature: Searching for Bobby Fischer. Finally, all students loved having the opportunity to speak in front of the class for our TED Talks.
When I look over all that I have done, I feel that I have not only prepared them for the requirements of the Common Core requirements, I have prepared them to critically read and analyze literature. I hope they will appreciate literature for more than just characters and plot.
